Transportation: 8 Great Ways to Explore the Low Lands

Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been to the Netherlands before, there are plenty of ways to explore the area around the Felison Cruise Terminal. From organized excursions to cycling through scenic landscapes, here are 8 ways to make the most of your visit to the Low Lands.

Excursions

1. Organized Excursions

The easiest and often most comfortable way to explore the Netherlands is by joining one of the many organized excursions offered on board each cruise ship. The options are usually broad and very well-organized, allowing you to enjoy a worry-free day.

While these excursions can be pricier, they are generally worth it. Especially if you want to visit popular attractions like the Van Gogh Museum or the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, an organized tour is highly recommended. You’re guaranteed entry, and the ship usually waits for passengers who experience delays.

Taxi

2. Taxis

For travelers who prefer to explore independently, taxis are a convenient option. Taxis are available in large numbers at the Felison Cruise Terminal taxi stand (directly in front of the terminal) during almost every cruise call. Keep in mind that taxis in the Netherlands can be expensive; a ride from the terminal to downtown Amsterdam often costs between €125 and €150. Negotiating a fare can sometimes help, but if you are not entirely confident, it is safer to go by the taxi meter.

3. Ridesharing (Uber & Bolt)

A more affordable alternative is ridesharing services like Uber and Bolt, which are also available in IJmuiden. These services are usually cheaper than standard taxis, but prices vary depending on supply and demand. During busy cruise days, fares can rise significantly. An insider tip: walk a short distance from the terminal — for example, toward the beach — before requesting a ride. This often results in a better price and faster pickup.

4. Pre-Booked Transfers

You can also arrange a transfer in advance through a reputable taxi company. For safety reasons, pre-booked taxis are not allowed on the pier or near the ship. No exceptions are made to this rule. Despite this, their excellent price-to-quality ratio, reliable service, and convenient door-to-door transportation make them a popular choice.

For example, you can pre-book your ride with this affordable company or the well-known service for a smooth and hassle-free transfer. This option is ideal for trips not only to Amsterdam or other destinations in the region, but also to locations further from the terminal, such as the famous Giethoorn or the picturesque Marken.

Pre-booked taxis pick you up just outside the terminal and provide a safe, comfortable, and dependable service. Many travelers appreciate the convenience of having a guaranteed ride ready upon arrival

Car rental

5. Car Rental

Starting spring 2026, the well-known company Enterprise  will offer car rentals directly at Felison Cruise Terminal. Renting a car is a convenient and affordable way to explore all that the Netherlands has to offer. Cars cannot be reserved in advance, but the friendly staff at the Car Rental Desk will be more than happy to assist you.

Vehicle availability may vary depending on arrival date, as it is subject to regional supply at the time. All rentals are all-inclusive, with insurance and related fees included in the price.

Car rental is perfect for day trips, for example to the world-famous Keukenhof.

Hop On Hop Off

6. Direct Transfer Bus to Amsterdam

Since late 2025, a ticket sales point is available at the Felison Cruise Terminal for a direct transfer bus to De Ruijterkade Oost in Amsterdam, near Central Station. From there, it’s just a 20-minute walk to the city center.

This service is available only in combination with a ticket for the famous red Hop-On Hop-Off bus, an Amsterdam canal cruise, or both — the perfect way to explore the city comfortably and efficiently.

Available combinations:

  • Direct transfer + 1-hour canal cruise – enjoy the sights from the water for only €38.00
  • Direct transfer + Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket – see the city at your own pace for €40.00
  • Direct transfer + Hop-On Hop-Off bus + Hop-On Hop-Off boat – the ultimate way to explore, just €48.00

Amsterdam City Sightseeing
Public bus

7. Public Transportation

The most budget-friendly way to reach Amsterdam or Haarlem is still by public transport, although it can be a bit more complex. During many cruise calls, a day pass for public transportation can be obtained at the Transportation Desk inside the Felison Cruise Terminal. With this pass, you can take a comfortable bus to Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station and continue into the heart of Amsterdam by train, metro, tram, or city bus. Extra buses are often deployed during busy days to reduce waiting times. Expect a travel time of roughly 60–75 minutes one way to Amsterdam Central Station and 45–60 minutes to Haarlem.

Biking

8. Biking

For travelers who want to experience the Netherlands authentically and actively, cycling is the perfect option. The Netherlands is a true cyclist’s paradise, and the extensive network of well-marked bike paths makes it easy to explore the area around the Felison Cruise Terminal. Bikes can be rented (at the Info Desk, inside the terminal) for just €30 per day, including a helmet, extra lock, and bike bag. Biking offers freedom, flexibility, and a unique way to enjoy the Dutch landscape, from dunes and fields to charming villages.

In Short:
Whether you choose an organized excursion, a taxi, ridesharing, a nice car, public transport, or a bike, there are always plenty of ways to explore the Netherlands from the Felison Cruise Terminal. Choose the option that best suits your preferences, budget, and schedule, and enjoy a wonderful day discovering the region!

Please note: Not all mentioned services are available during every cruise call. During visits by smaller ships, some services (such as car rental) may be limited or unavailable. Cruise Port IJmuiden has no control over the availability of these services.
