In recent years, the Port of IJmuiden has developed into a modern stopover port. In addition to serving the fishing, oil and gas, and wind industries, IJmuiden has become a well-equipped and easily accessible cruise port.
Thanks to its excellent accessibility and favorable location near many famous Dutch attractions, more and more major cruise lines are choosing IJmuiden as a destination. The fact that cruise ships are becoming less welcome in Amsterdam also plays an increasing role in this decision.
However, for the majority of cruise passengers, the city of Amsterdam remains the main attraction. The most frequently asked question is: “How do I get to Amsterdam?” Below is an overview of your options:
1. Organized Excursion
The most convenient and secure option is booking an organized excursion on board your ship. While this is usually the most expensive choice, it has the advantage that the ship is responsible for your transport. For example, the ship will wait for you in case of unexpected delays.
2. Shuttle Service Provided by the Cruise Line
Some cruise lines offer a (budget-friendly) shuttle service. We recommend using these services for convenience and safety.
3. Taxi
Taking a taxi is the fastest way to reach Amsterdam. However, keep in mind that taxis in the Netherlands are relatively expensive. A ride from the Felison Cruise Terminal to Amsterdam city center costs approximately €125.00 (sedan for up to 4 passengers) or €140.00 (minibus for up to 8 passengers). You can try negotiating for a better price. Taxis are usually readily available at the taxi stand in front of the Felison Cruise Terminal.
4. Uber, Bolt, et cetera
Cheaper alternatives to traditional taxis include services like Uber and Bolt, which are also available in IJmuiden. They often offer desirable rates. Please make sure to select “Felison Cruise Terminal” as your pickup and drop-off location and not “Felison Terminal,” which is the ferry terminal, located elsewhere in IJmuiden.
5. Direct Transfer Service
During some port calls -especially those involving Norwegian Cruise Line ships- you can purchase tickets for a direct transfer service (by coach) to Amsterdam city center at the terminal desk. A round-trip ticket costs € 45.00 (as of 2024), and the journey takes about 40 minutes one way.
6. Public Transport
The most affordable way to travel to Amsterdam (or other nearby destinations like Haarlem) is by public transport. During most cruise calls, a public transport ticket desk is open at the terminal. Here, you can purchase an Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket for just € 21.00 per person. This ticket includes a round trip to Amsterdam (by bus and train) and unlimited public transport within the city.
Day tickets for Haarlem are also available; a day pass for two persons costs only € 15.00. On busy days (with lots of passengers), extra buses are often added to reduce waiting times.
Important: Both public transport- and direct shuttle tickets are offered by third-party companies and are not the responsibility of the Felison Cruise Terminal.
